On Thursday 6 August 2020 at 10:00am, the Robinson River Local Authority held its first meeting. Local authorities give people in regional and remote areas of the Northern Territory (NT) a strong voice in local government. At the Council's July Ordinary meeting, 10 Community Members were appointed to sit on the Local Authority and to represent the voices of Robinson River. The inaugural meeting came after a 12 month process, working with the Northern Territory Government, the Mungoorbada Aboriginal Corporation and consulting with the Robinson River community.
Mayor Judy MacFarlane attended and welcomed the new community members. She passed on her congratulations to the new members of the Robinson River Local Authority. Councillor Marlene Karkadoo, of the South West Gulf Ward said "It was a pleasure attending the meeting at Robinson River and most importantly meeting with the very first Local Authority members, whom will be the voice in their community. Robinson River can work with the Roper Gulf Regional Council to get more things done for their community!"
Roper Gulf Regional Council is excited to include Robinson River to its existing 11 communities that hold Local Authority Meetings and provide a voice to Council for their communities, enabling Council to encourage more local decision making in government.
