Roper Gulf Regional Council’s Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) program provides a safe, engaging, and supportive environment for children outside of regular school hours. Delivered in Beswick and Jilkminggan, the program offers a range of activities designed to support children’s social, emotional, and educational development.
OSHC aligns with the My Time, Our Place framework, focusing on five key learning outcomes:
- Children have a strong sense of identity
- Children are connected with and contribute to their world
- Children have a strong sense of wellbeing
- Children are confident and involved learners
- Children are effective communicators
Through activities such as arts and crafts, games, storytelling, bushwalking, and team challenges, the program encourages creativity, curiosity, and skill-building in a fun and inclusive setting. Staff work closely with children and families to tailor activities that reflect local culture, interests, and strengths.
The program also promotes positive educational outcomes, helping to improve literacy, numeracy, and school attendance, while fostering essential life skills. By providing a welcoming space for learning and play, OSHC complements children’s experiences at home, school, and in the community.
The OSHC program is funded by the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA), supporting the delivery of culturally appropriate, community-led initiatives that enhance learning and development for children in remote communities.
