The construction of a shade structure over the Borroloola Basketball Courts has been released for tender, with works expected to commence early next year. This project is one component of the $6.9 million Borroloola Sports Courts and Cyclone Shelter project.
Funding for this stage of the project, which is stage one of two planned to take place in Borroloola next year, has been provided by the Northern Territory Government.
Stage Two of the project is the construction of a Cyclone Shelter and additional sports courts, funded by the Northern Territory Government (NTG) and McArthur River Mine Community Benefits Trust.
Northern Territory Government Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics Eva Lawler said creating cyclone shelter infrastructure helps our remote NT communities in so many ways.
“Our Government is delivering for Territorians by investing in projects and initiatives that will drive economic prosperity and job creation, and improve the safety and liveability in communities, right across the Territory.
“Construction of the new cyclone shelter in Borroloola will create local jobs and provide safety for the community’s residents during tropical cyclones, improving community resilience in the region.”
Delays were experienced following Cyclone Trevor last year, with this second stage of the project being re-evaluated. The scope of works has since been accurately costed by Quantity Surveyors and additional funds were required to ensure that a Level 4 Cyclone Shelter was able to be built for the Borroloola community. The Quantity Surveyors Report increased the project estimate from $4.4 million to a total of $6.9 million.
The commencement of stage two is subject to funding arrangements currently being discussed between Council and NTG; following the sourcing of additional funds from the Northern Territory Government. We are expecting the procurement phase to occur in early 2021 and the construction to commence shortly after.
Roper Gulf Regional Council is excited to be in partnership with the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics (DIPL). They will be project managing both stages of the project.
Council looks forward to working with NTG, DIPL and the Borroloola community during the construction phase of this project and responsibility for the Basketball Courts and Cyclone Shelter’s ongoing management into the future.
We aim to keep the community and stakeholders informed of the project’s progress into the future.
