The mighty Beswick Bears triumphed last weekend in winning the Traditional Credit Union CU Cup played in Katherine after a clear win against Jilkminggan 97 to 25. The Cup is awarded at the end of the minor Championship before the final season.

The Bears are a strong local team from Beswick, a small town of 350 people, where AFL footy is a lifestyle not just a game. The local team has been one of the standout clubs in the region and has extended its influence in the TCU Cup.

Roper Gulf Regional Council is a strong supporter of local footy and assisted the club by providing regular transport by bus from Beswick to Katherine a round trip of over 200 kilometers.

The Bears are coached by the legendary Joseph Brown who is in his first year as a coach. Coach Brown is confident that the Bears will win through the finals and take home the main prize.

“They are a great team who has really found their feet in the second half of the season. Aidan Lindsay starred for us last week and took home the “Best on the ground” award as well. We are all jumping to get into the finals”, he said.

Mayor Tony Jack also congratulated the team and all teams competing in the Cup.

“The footy comps in the Roper Gulf Region are a great example of how local team sport can bring communities together…. it’s Country footy at its best and I congratulate the Bears and there supporters on their win on the weekend. We also recognise the commitment of players and supporters who travel long distances to play every week. Council is happy to support the Beswick Bears and other teams get to and from these games.”

The Bears play at 4pm at the Nitmilik Oval on Saturday 30 August 2014.
