The official opening of the Borroloola Sports and Cyclone Shelter will take place on Thursday, 28 August 2025 at 10:00 am.
The facility is a major infrastructure investment for the Borroloola region, providing both a critical emergency shelter and a multi-purpose space for community use.
Designed to accommodate up to 600 people during cyclones and natural disasters, the building will play a key role in regional preparedness and response.
Outside of emergencies, the centre will support local sport, host events and markets, and provide a welcoming venue for community gatherings.
Owned and operated by Roper Gulf Regional Council, the facility includes indoor courts, modern amenities, and versatile open-plan space.
The project was delivered through a funding partnership between the Northern Territory Government, the McArthur River Mine Community Benefits Trust, and Roper Gulf Regional Council.
Roper Gulf Regional Council Chief Executive Officer David Hurst said the facility reflects a long-term commitment to improving community resilience and access to local infrastructure.
“This project is about more than just infrastructure, it’s about protecting lives during emergencies and providing a high-quality space that supports community wellbeing every day of the year,” Mr Hurst said.
“It reflects the strength of collaboration between Council, the Northern Territory Government, and McArthur River Mine Community Benefits Trust.”
The opening will include formal proceedings, light refreshments, and attendance from stakeholders, partners, and community members.
All members of the public are kindly invited to attend and celebrate the official opening of this much-anticipated facility.
