The Mataranka Tip will re-open on Wednesday 19 June 2024 at 7am after needing to be closed for nearly three weeks due to safety concerns.
Roper Gulf Regional Council closed the tip on 30 May 2024 due to suspected asbestos contamination at the site. Although there were no immediate health risks, this action was taken as a precaution and with the safety of residents at the forefront of the decision.
During this time, the weekly residential waste collection for Mataranka continued as normal and business owners were advised to take their commercial waste to the Jilkminggan tip at a reduced cost.
The material test sample was sent to Darwin and the Council was informed today, Tuesday 18 June, that no asbestos was detected.
The Mataranka Tip has therefore been cleared to re-open.
The Council understands the frustration this caused for residents and business owners who regularly use the tip and apologises for the inconvenience.
The tip will be open from 7:00am – 3:00pm from Monday to Friday and 9:00am – 3:00pm on the weekend and public holidays.
