Roper Gulf Communities Receive Donation of Second Hand Bikes

Kids riding bikes in a remote community

The young people of Numbulwar and Ngukurr have received a generous donation of second hand bikes that were delivered to each community just before Christmas.

A total of 80 bikes were donated last year in a collaborative effort from multiple organisations across the country.

A massive thank you to the volunteers at Bicycles 4 Humanity (WA) for collecting, refurbishing and packing the bikes, to Red Rock Drilling who organised the transportation from Perth to Darwin, and to Murray Turner of Lindsell Hoists and Hanna Welsh for connecting the dots and coordinating the donation to the Roper Gulf region.

The refurbished bikes were delivered to Numbulwar and Ngukurr in December 2022 and have been utilised in the School Holiday Programs and Sport and Recreation Programs.

Bike riding is great for children of all ages as it promotes physical activity outdoors, new life skills and an improved healthy lifestyle. It also teaches values such as responsibility and independence.

As you can see by the children's smiles, they are all very happy with their new wheels!

Bicycles 4 Humanity (WA)

B4HWA is part of an exciting global volunteer-run, non-profit organisation that uses donated bikes to help alleviate poverty through sustainable transport. Every year around 1.5 million bikes are sold across Australia – about around half of these will end up unused or abandoned.
