Indigenous Football Week in Borroloola

Young children playing football on a school oval at dusk

On Friday 3rd November, Mustafa (known as Mussy) from John Moriarty Football organised a series of football matches to take place on the Borroloola School oval for Indigenous Football Week.

The theme for Indigenous Football Week 2023 is Li-ngambala wiji which translates to ‘community’ in Yanyuwa language, as spoken by families in Borroloola.

This event exemplified the power of stakeholder collaboration and engagement, with multiple organisations working together for the benefit of the community.

Thank you to Steve McAllan from the McArthur River Mine Community Benefits Trust, who ensured that the youngest participants enjoyed age-appropriate games and the Council's Sport and Recreation staff who played a pivotal role, offering support and encouragement to those participating in and coordinating this event.

Thank you also to Grant and Tracey from YMCA Northern Territory (The Y NT) who assisted Council staff in organising and cooking a BBQ for all participants.

And finally, thank you to Mussy and the team from John Moriarty Football for your dedication to sport and community development in Borroloola.
