Roper Gulf Regional Council welcomed a new Australian citizen at its Ordinary Meeting of Council on Wednesday 21 June 2023.
Anh Thi Hai Tran moved to Melbourne from Vietnam in 2012 to study a Bachelor of Accounting and then moved to Darwin in 2018 to pursue her Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree at Charles Darwin University.
“When I graduated in 2020, Covid-19 happened and I saw the advertisement about the Hiway Inn looking for staff.
“So my partner (now husband) and I decided to move to Daly Waters. We got married here in January 2022, as we love this place and do not have any plans to move anywhere else,” said Ms Tran.
Ms Tran made the pledge of commitment and received her Australian citizenship certificate in front of Mayor Tony Jack, Elected Members and Council staff at the Council Chambers in Katherine.
Her husband Thuy and their marriage celebrant Nola Sweetman also joined Miss Tran for the ceremony.
This was the first citizenship ceremony for the Roper Gulf region since 2017 and Mayor Tony Jack said he was delighted to be a part of this special occasion.
“Citizenship ceremonies provide an opportunity for all of us to reflect on our Australian values that make our country such a great place to live.
“It is indeed a great honour as Mayor to celebrate this final step of becoming an Australian citizen with our constituents.
“It is always a meaningful occasion and everyone in attendance yesterday felt the significance of the ceremony.
“On behalf of Roper Gulf Regional Council, I wish Ms Tran a heartfelt congratulations on becoming an Australian Citizen and hope for a happy and successful future in Australia,” Mayor Jack said.
Ms Tran was presented with her citizenship certificate and gifted local Indigenous artwork from Djilpin Arts in Wugularr (Beswick) and a native tree to plant at her home in Daly Waters.
