After careful consideration at its Finance Committee Meeting on Wednesday 24 March 2021, Roper Gulf Regional Council resolved to suspend the increase to Rates, Fees and Charges for the 2021/22 financial year.

In recognising the needs of our people, an extensive analysis on the financial impact of not increasing these charges was undertaken and it was decided that the overall effect would be negligible to Council’s services.

Residents and stakeholders in the Roper Gulf region can still rely on the high level of service delivery that Council has committed to and this reduction in projected income does not signal a decline in planned services and projects.

Roper Gulf Regional Council Mayor Judy MacFarlane commended Committee members for putting people before profit during a time where many are still suffering from financial distress due to COVID-19.

“Council is mindful of the current economic climate and the difficulties faced by residents and businesses in our Council area.

“Council is pleased to be in a position to offer residents a measure of financial relief during this time with the decision to freeze increases to Rates, Fees and Charges,” she said.

Acting Chief Executive Officer Marc Gardner said “The overall effect of this decision will have minimal operational impact on the Council for the financial year and we are confident that we are still able to achieve an efficient and high quality standard of service delivery.”

The draft Budget for the 2021/22 Financial Year will be made available to view on Council’s website next month and is anticipated to be adopted by Council at the Ordinary Meeting of Council in June.
