Construction of the Mataranka Cemetery car park is currently in progress and is scheduled for completion by the end of March 2021.
At the request of the Mataranka Local Authority, Roper Gulf Regional Council funded this project to support the growing infrastructure needs in the town.
The Mataranka Cemetery, which is located at Lot 75 on Carew Road, did not have any off-road parking facilities prior to the commencement of this project.
The construction of a car park will provide parking facilities to the residents and other general public during funeral events.
In 2020, Council held discussions and consultations with community stakeholders and engaged MLEI Consulting to design the car park as per the needs.
The construction contract was awarded to Northern Machinery Sales, a local contractor, who is located at the footprint of Roper Gulf Regional Council. The total value of the project is $297,422.52 (ex GST).
The project, which commenced in October 2020, was delayed due to the unserviceable bores in the area and wet weather conditions.
Earthworks were completed for sub-grade and base layers of car park area in December, however due to the rainfall events in January, prepared surfaces were damaged and required remedial works.
The contractor was advised not to proceed with concrete and sealing works in January due to unfavourable conditions.
With no rainfall events over the last couple of weeks, the Contactor has mobilised to the site again and re-commenced the works on 10 March 2021.
Works are expected to be completed by 30 March 2021, including testing and final inspection.
