Roper Gulf Regional Council has provided an additional $196,000 in funding to award the contract for the construction of a shade structure over the Borroloola Basketball Courts, which will occur within the next month.
This is Stage One of the overall construction of the Shade Structure and Cyclone Shelter project at the Borroloola Basketball Courts.
The Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics is managing this process and expects on site works for Stage One to commence middle to late June 2021 and to conclude by the end of December 2021.
The Northern Territory Government has budgeted $5 million for Stage Two of the project, the construction of the Cyclone Shelter, in its 2021/22 budget and the McArthur River Mine Community Benefits Trust has contributed $1.5 million.
It is anticipated that construction of Stage Two will be completed by the middle of 2022. Between now and the start of 2022, Council will be working with the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics on the design, documentation and procurement processes associated with Stage Two of the project.
Acting Chief Executive Officer Marc Gardner would like to thank residents in Borroloola for their patience with this project.
“We appreciate the community’s patience in the development of these projects, however proper planning needs to be undertaken to ensure that a quality project is delivered for the community.
“These valued assets need to be built to a high standard, fit for the purpose of surviving a cyclone and that will last for many years”, Marc said.
Roper Gulf Regional Council endeavours to keep the Borroloola community informed about this project as it develops and is implemented.
