Cenotaphs get a face lift

The communities of Borroloola and Mataranka will soon benefit from a collaboration between Local Council and the Federal Governments Stronger Communities Programme, with a grant approved to upgrade the Cenotaph in both town parks.

The investment will see the ageing Cenotaphs in both towns upgraded to a standard befitting their meaning.

Borroloola and Mataranka host ANZAC Day events annually and this project will ensure a better vantage point for growing crowds involved in the ceremonies.

In line with the Stronger Communities Programme intended outcome to deliver social benefits across Australia, the project will use locally sourced contractors and participants of the Community Development Program to complete the upgrades.

Roper Gulf Regional Council Mayor, Judy Macfarlane, says it’s a welcome development which is expected to be completed by ANZAC Day 2019.

“This project will upgrade the current cenotaphs providing adequate flag poles, site hardening and configuration of sites in both remote communities of Borroloola and Mataranka,” she said.

“As a Council we want to encourage a strong attendance at important events such as ANZAC Day, honouring those who fought or lost loved ones in the current and past Wars”

“In addition, these upgrades will complement and enhance the recent upgrades to other services within Tamarind Park in Borroloola and Stan Martin Park in Mataranka.”

The project is being funded in part by the Federal Government, with Roper Gulf Regional Council making an in-kind contribution and managing delivery of the service.

Mayor Macfarlane says it’s a sound investment which will also deliver economic benefits to the communities.

“On behalf of Council and the Roper Gulf Region, I would like to thank the Federal Government and the Member for Lingiari for supporting these important community projects.”
