A $15,000 grant from the NT Government continues the development of bush food and medicinal plant orchards at Ngukurr.
The NT Government has announced a $15,000 grant to provide support for the continuation of the Bush food and Medicinal Plants Streetscaping project at Ngukurr.
With this funding Roper Gulf Regional Council will lead the planting of 700 bush tucker and medicinal plant seedlings at selected public spaces in Ngukurr. These plantings will also be marked by interpretive plaques in local languages, Kriol and English.
The Chief Minister Adam Giles encouraged the project saying,
“..It will provide for both community pride and an attraction for visitors.”
This will continue a project which begun earlier this year where local bush food trees and medicinal plants were planted by communities in public spaces across the Roper Gulf region.
Roper Gulf Regional Council Mayor Tony Jack added his support to the project saying,
“The bush tucker plantings in our towns have been a great success and it will also fit in with our recently announced plan to develop pedestrian paths and road safety improvements at Ngukurr. This will definitely improve the amenity of what is already a well kept and attractive town.”
“The project will ultimately provide a source of local food and medicine and help sustain Indigenous botanical knowledge in Ngukurr. We will also be able to involve local school kids, young people and the general community in the project.”
The project is planned to start early in the 2015.
