‘Stand up goodbala wai’ – voices from the youth of Roper Gulf Shire will be heard at the inaugural Roper Gulf Shire Council Youth Leadership in Communities Conference - 25-26 June 2013.
Roper Gulf Shire Mayor Tony Jack has announced an important initiative to be sponsored by the Roper Gulf Shire in conjunction with LGANT and the Department of Children and Families. The inaugural Roper Gulf Shire Council Youth Leadership in Communities Conference will be held in Katherine on 25-26 June 2013 to help develop leadership skills and confidence in the Youth Voice committees from across the Roper Gulf Shire.
This conference will bring together young leaders from the Youth Voice Committees, established by the Council and will cover topics including leadership skills, problem solving techniques, conflict resolution and will involve a strong non violence message for them to take back to their communities and towns.
Mayor Jack said that the introduction of such a conference is only one of a series of events focusing on young people in the Roper Gulf Shire adding that “Youth development is one of the main priorities Council has identified for the upcoming financial year. These young people are potential leaders in their community in the near future and we hope to provide the skills, resources and knowledge of the processes of good governance to assist them to become strong leaders for their community.”
Young people make up a significant percentage of the growing population in Roper Gulf Shire. The medium age is 24 years and nearly one in three of our residents are under 15 years of age. Hence Council recognise the young community and the need to be heard in the deliberations of Council.
The RGSC Youth Leadership in Communities Conference will include a formal dinner and conclude with the group attending the Ordinary Council Meeting to be held in Barunga on the 27 June. The RGSC Youth Leadership in Communities Conference group will present their recommendations to Council through a formal resolution and will have an opportunity to raise issues and conference findings directly with the Roper Gulf Shire Council.
