Waste Management

Find out more about the Waste Management strategies in the region

Waste Management Services

  • Regular rubbish bin collection from residential and commercial properties
  • The operation of a Recycling Centre in Mataranka and Borroloola which primarily focus on facilitating a Container Deposit Scheme function across the region
  • The management of the Waste Management Facilities (WMF) in each community and town

The WMF needs to be kept at standards pursuant to Environment Protection Authority (EPA) standards which entail reducing landfill through the separation and recovery of recyclable materials.

A Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy is currently being developed by Council that will address the compliance requirements of all our Waste Management Facilities, reducing land-fill across the Region through waste separation and recovering recyclable materials.

The strategy will integrate the expansion of container deposit processing at the Mataranka and Borroloola Recycling Centres with this broader recycling function. It is hoped that this strategy will extend the life of our waste facilities and lead to significant improvements in sustainable practices and reduction in the impacts on the environment.
