About Booroloola

Borroloola is in the South West Gulf ward. It is situated on the eastern coast of the Northern Territory in the Gulf of the Carpentaria and on the banks of the McArthur River. Borroloola is 670 kilometres east-south-east of Katherine. Borroloola includes four town camps within its boundary – Garawa Camp One, Garawa Camp Two, Yanyula Camp and Mara Camp.

Access

Borroloola may be accessed via the Carpentaria Highway which is a sealed, all-weather, single lane road. It is approximately seven hours drive from Katherine. Borroloola is also located on the Savannah Way which links Cairns Northern Queensland and Broome in Western Australia. The road east is an unsealed road and can be subject to closures in the wet season. The Tablelands Highway also links Tennant Creek.  Borroloola may also be accessed via chartered small aircraft. It is approximately two kilometres from the Borroloola Airstrip to the Town Centre. Furthermore, there is a barge landing 40 kilometres from Borroloola which is functional only when weather conditions are suitable.

Booroloola Services

Roper Gulf Regional Council provides a range of Local Government services in Borroloola including road maintenance and repair, traffic management, rubbish collection, upkeep of parks, gardens and weed maintenance, community safety through Night Patrol, companion animal welfare and control, assets and fleet management, sport and recreation and governance support. Roper Gulf Regional Council operates a Swimming pool and a Rubbish Dump for effective waste management.

Mabunji Aboriginal Resource Indigenous Corporation operates a Child Care Centre, an Aged Care Centre, Art and Craft Centre, Sea Ranger Unit, Nursery, Mechanical Workshop, Radio Station and Safe House in Borroloola. Mabunji Aboriginal Resource Indigenous Corporation also assists Roper Gulf Regional Council with waste management through the collection of car bodies and transporting them to the Borroloola Dump.

Other services in Borroloola include a Police Station, School, Health Clinic, Motels and Caravan Parks, Cafes and several shops.

Local Government and Local Authority Meetings (Governance)

An integral part of the community consultation process in the community of Borroloola occurs through Borroloola Local Authority Meetings. The Local Authority is made up of the Elected Member/s who sit on Council for the South West Gulf Ward and nominated representatives from the community. All other stakeholders in Borroloola are also invited to attend the Local Authority Meetings. The resolutions made at these meetings form the basis of all planning made by Roper Gulf Regional Council.
