Residents from the remote Ngyirranggulung Ward will elect a new Council representative next month, as Roper Gulf Regional Council prepares to hold a by-election in the seat on September 20.

The vacancy follows the resignation of former Barunga Councillor Wayne Runyu, who held the position since September 2017.

The Ngyirranggulung Ward spans more than 40,000 square kilometres and is home to around 900 people in the remote communities of Barunga, Beswick, Manyallaluk, Bulman and Weemol.

Council’s A/CEO, Sharon Hillen, says the vacancy presents an exciting opportunity for a new candidate to step-up and help shape the future of the region.

“Elected Members have such a vital role in deciding which Council projects and services are delivered within the remote communities of the Roper Gulf region,” she said.

“They also play a key role in communicating the needs and issues impacting our residents, so holding a position on Council really presents a great opportunity to be a strong voice for local people.

“I urge any eligible candidates who have an interest in standing for Council and representing their community to nominate for the position.”

Nominations are open from August 29 until September 4, with the successful candidate to be announced by Council on Monday October 1, 2018.

Voting is COMPULSORY for Ngyirranggulung Ward residents who must be registered to vote by no later than Monday September 3.  Enrolment forms are available from Council offices, NT Electoral Commission offices or Australia Post outlets.  Enrolment is also available online at www.ntec.nt.gov.au.
